Sustainable development demands an environmentally friendly and efficient method for the hydrogenation of organic molecules, including the hydrogenation of functionalized nitroarenes. In this study, a highly active and selective metal-organic framework-supported palladium catalyst was prepared for the catalytic hydrogenation of nitroarenes. High selectivity (>99%) and excellent yield (98%) of aniline were realized after 2 hours in ethanol under hydrogen (1 atm) at room temperature. The reductions were successfully carried out in the presence of a wide range of other reducible functional groups. More importantly, the catalyst was very stable without the loss of its catalytic activity after five cycles.

In this paper, we report on a new dielectric, a C-60-containing block polyimide (PI-b-C-60). This was realized by introducing C-60 as pendent groups into a polymer backbone. When this dielectric was used in a non-contact mode triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), it achieved high output power and reliable operation. Compared with perfluoroalkoxy alkane film-based TENGs, the TENG based on PI-b-C-60 generated 4.3 times higher output power and a superior charge density of over 300 mu C m(-2) with a 3 times slower charge decay rate. These results are most likely due to the excellent charge-retention characteristics induced by the most negative electrostatic potential of C-60 within the backbone, and these characteristics were confirmed by surface potential measurements. Furthermore, in the course of our work, two non-contact mode applications, a keyless electronic door lock system and a speed sensor with a tone wheel for a car, were developed. Without an ion injection process being needed, very sensitive and reliable operations of the speed sensor were successfully demonstrated, even under very humid conditions (similar to 99% RH).

C-Br/N-H bulk polycondensation is firstly proposed and corresponding poly(3,4-dinitm-thiophen-2-yl aryl-amine)s derivatives have been successfully obtained with quantitative yield. Typical crystal analysis reveals that its effective reaction points distance (RPD, distance between Br and H atom) is 5.083 angstrom, which is 66.7% longer than the sum of van der Waals radius (r(w)) of bromine and hydrogen atoms (3.05 angstrom). Metal-free, visible-light-induced denitrogenative phosphorylation of 1,2,3-benzotriazinones was achieved. With the use of eosin Y as a photoredox catalyst, N,N-diisopropylethylamine as a base, CH3CN-H2O as a solvent and sunlight or a blue LED as a light source, a variety of aryl-phosphonates, aryl-phosphinates, and aryl-phosphine oxides were efficiently prepared. In addition, B(2)pin(2) instead of P-nucleophiles as a radical acceptor was also demonstrated. The key advantages of this newly developed method are the clean reaction profile, use of a low-cost organic-dye catalyst, energy efficiency, broad substrate scope, good to excellent yields and large-scale synthetic applicability. The gram-scale synthesised compounds could be isolated in pure form just upon extraction, followed by re-crystallisation; no tedious chromatographic purification was required.

Three novel hexacoordinated nickel catalysts containing salicylaldbenzhydrylimine ligand and tetrahydrofuran heterocycle, Ni{(THF) (3-R-1) (5-R-2)C6H2(O)CHNCH(C6H5)(2)}(2), (R-1 = Br, R-2 = H, Ni1; R-1 = Br, R-2 = Br, Ni2; R-1 = Cl, R-2 = Cl, Ni3.), were synthesized and their molecular structures were confirmed by X-ray crystallography. Ni1-Ni3 catalysts exhibited high activities (0.53-2.11 x 10(6) g(polymer)/mol(Ni).h) toward norbornene homopolymerization and high activity (0.29-2.62 x 10(5) g(polymer)/mol(Ni).h) to copolymerization of norbornene and 1-hexene. When the 1-hexene feed ratio was changed from 10 to 70%, the 1-hexene content in the obtained copolymers could be controlled to 8.23-26.58%. The Ni3 with R-1 and R-2 were both electron withdrawing groups (-Cl) on the aromatic ring of salicylaldehyde, showed the highest activity as well as the highest 1-hexene insert ratios. At the same time, only a small amount of B(C6F5)(3) cocatalyst (5 x 10(-5) mol) need to be consumed in the copolymerization process. In addition, the obtained copolymers had a high thermal decomposition temperature (T-d > 386 degrees C) and a low glass transition temperature (T-g = 208.67-237.42 degrees C), which showed that the processability of these polymers was improved while the high thermal decomposition temperature was kept. Three AIE (aggregation-induced emission)-ESIPT (excited-state intramolecular proton transfer) active 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)benzothiazole derivatives, HL1, HL2 and HL3 with one, two and three rotatable phenyl groups, were obtained and characterized. Their AIE properties in THF/HEPES solution were investigated in detail. HL2 shows the best AIE performance with 71-fold fluorescence enhancement, while HL3 only shows a 9-fold enhancement. With the AIE property, HL1 and HL2 could act as fluorescence chemosensors to detect Cu2+ ions via the turn off mode in THF/HEPES media. With the ESIPT property, HL1 and HL2 could also detect Zn2+ ions via the turn on mode in EtOH/HEPES media. During the detection process, both demonstrate rapid response and high contrast before and after the addition of metal ions. The species formed in the detection system were investigated. The results of X-ray single-crystal diffraction confirm that Zn2+ is coordinated with the oxygen atom and Schiff base nitrogen atom instead of the benzothiazole nitrogen atom in the tetrahedron geometry. Moreover, the chemosensors were successfully constructed into handy fluorescence test papers for Cu2+ and Zn2+ detection.

A collection of potent antimicrobials consisting of novel 1,3-bis-benzoic acid and trifluoromethyl phenyl derived pyrazoles has been synthesized and tested for antibacterial activity. The majority of trifluoromethyl phenyl derivatives are highly potent growth inhibitors of Gram-positive bacteria and showed low toxicity to human cultured cells. In particular, two compounds (59 and 74) were selected for additional studies. These compounds are highly effective against Staphylococcus aureus as shown by a low minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), a bactericidal effect in time-kill assays, moderate inhibition of biofilm formation as well as biofilm destruction, and a bactericidal effect against stationary phase cells representing non-growing persister cells. Multistep resistance assays showed a very low tendency for S. aureus and Enterococcus faecalis to develop resistance through mutation. Additionally, in vivo mouse model studies showed no harmful effects at doses up to 50 mg/kg using 14 blood plasma organ toxicity markers or TUNEL assay in liver and kidney. Investigations into the mode of action by performing macromolecular synthesis inhibition studies showed a broad range of inhibitory effects, suggesting targets that have a global effect on bacterial cell function. A novel Pd/Cu-cocatalyzed carbonylative cyclization by C-H activation and N-dealkylative C-N bond activation has been developed for the chemoselective construction of synthetically useful heterocycles. The N,N-dimethylamine group on o-indolyl-N,N-dimethylarylamines was found to act as both the directing group and reactive component in this C-H carbonylative cyclization reaction. Furthermore, a unique C-H oxidation/carbonylative lactonization of diarylmethylamines is firstly demonstrated under modified reaction conditions, which could be easily applicable to the one-step synthesis of multi-substituted phthalides bearing an N,O-ketal skeleton that is difficult to access by previously reported methods. Mechanistic studies implicate that Pd/Cu-cocatalyzed C-H oxidation/carbonylative lactonization is a sequential reaction system via Cu-catalyzed C(sp(3))-H oxidation and Pd-catalyzed oxidative carbonylation of the C(sp(2))-H bond. It was found that trace amounts of water are essential to promote the Cu-catalyzed C(sp(3))-H oxidation of diarylmethylamine for the formation of the hydroxyl group, which could act as an in situ-formed directing group in the intramolecular carbonylative lactonization step.

Insect-microbial symbioses have vast biochemical diversity, which is beneficial to produce bioactive secondary metabolites. In this study, chemical examination of a Streptomyces sp. associated with a mud dauber wasp led to the isolation of fourteen compounds. Their structures were determined by spectroscopic methods and comparison with literature data. Among the isolates, compounds 1,2,3-benzotriazin-4(1H)-one and 4-(2-aminoethyl)phenyl acetate were first reported from this species. Bioactivities of the isolated compounds were assayed for the first time against hexokinase II. 4-(2-Aminoethyl)phenyl acetate, germicidin B, phenylacetic acid, isogermicidin A and germicidin C displayed significant inhibitory activity against hexokinase II, with the IC50 values of 5.11, 7.11, 7.15, 8.45 and 8.78 mu M, respectively.
