An efficient protocol for the catalytic chemo-selective reduction of tert-amides RC(O)N(R1)R2 (R = Me, Ph, 4-cyanophenyl, etc.; R1 = Me, Et, Ph, etc.; R2 = Me, Et, i-Pr; R1R2 = -(CH2)4-) with pinacolborane (HBpin) to afford the corresponding amines RCH2N(+)H(R1)R2Cl(-) in high yields using aluminum complexes I (X = S, Se) as pre-catalysts at room temp was reported. The aluminum complexes were prepared from the reaction of II (X = S, Se) and trimethylaluminum in toluene. The solid-state structure of complex I (X = Se) is established. Tertiary amides with a wide array of electron-withdrawing and electron-donating functional groups were easily converted to the desired products through the selective cleavage of the amides’ C=O bond by aluminum hydride as an active species.
