Sustainable development demands an environmentally friendly and efficient method for the hydrogenation of organic molecules, including the hydrogenation of functionalized nitroarenes. In this study, a highly active and selective metal-organic framework-supported palladium catalyst was prepared for the catalytic hydrogenation of nitroarenes. High selectivity (>99%) and excellent yield (98%) of aniline were realized after 2 hours in ethanol under hydrogen (1 atm) at room temperature. The reductions were successfully carried out in the presence of a wide range of other reducible functional groups. More importantly, the catalyst was very stable without the loss of its catalytic activity after five cycles.

Asymmetric synthesis based on DNA scaffolds has been actively exploited because of the advantages of DNA such as diverse tertiary structures, chemical stability, and easy handling. Since duplex DNA-based hybrid catalysts have demonstrated this remarkable capability, efforts have been made to investigate new biomolecular scaffolds. Herein, we report modular quadruplex-duplex (QD) hybrid DNA catalysts containing bipyridine ligands and hydrogen donor moieties. The conformation, thermal stability, and metal-binding ability of modified QD hybrid DNA were characterized using spectroscopy. The QD hybrid-based DNA catalysts were successfully applied to asymmetric Michael addition reactions (86% conversion and 76% ee). This study describes a new type of DNA hybrid catalyst produced by the construction of a cooperative active site with a Lewis acid and a H-bond donor.

In this study, ABA triblock copolymers derived from 4,4′-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)-diphthalic anhydride-2,3,5,6-tetramethyl-1,4-phenylenediamine (6FDA-TeMPD; PI) and 3-hydroxy-1-adamantyl methacrylate (HAdMA) or 3,5-dihydroxy-1-adamantyl methacrylate (DHAdMA) have been synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization to generate mechanically tough and thermally stable gas-separation membranes with composition-tunable transport properties. Due to the inherent thermodynamic incompatibility between the chemically dissimilar blocks, these two series of triblock copolymers appear microphase-separated. While the gas permeability coefficients of these triblock copolymer membranes are consistently lower than that of PI due to the reduced fractional free volume of HAdMA and DHAdMA, the solubility coefficients of the copolymers are higher than that of PI due presumably to specific interactions between the polar hydroxyl group(s) and penetrant gas molecules. These triblock copolymers synthesized from PI and hydrophilic adamantane derivatives constitute a new class of nanostructured polymeric materials possessing excellent thermomechanical properties in conjunction with designer gas-separation properties.

A series of oxy-ether tris-amino heteroditopic macrobicycles (L1-L4) with various cavity dimensions have been synthesized and explored for their Cu(II) catalyzed selective single step aerial oxidative cross-coupling of primary alcohol based anilines with several aromatic amines toward the formation of primary alcohol appended cross azobenzenes (POCABs). The beauty of this transformation is that the easily oxidizable benzyl/primary alcohol group remains unhampered during the course of this oxidation due to the protective oxy-ether pocket of this series of macrobicyclic vessels. Various dimensionalities of the molecular vessels have shown specific size complementary selection for substrates toward efficient syntheses of regioselective POCAB products. To establish the requirement of the three-dimensional cavity based additives, a particular catalytic reaction has been examined in the presence of macrobicycles (L2 and L3) versus macrocycles (MC1 and MC2) and tripodal acyclic (AC1 and AC2) analogous components, respectively. Subsequently, L1-L4 have been extensively utilized toward the syntheses of as many as 44 POCABs and are characterized by different spectroscopic techniques and single crystal X-ray diffraction studies.

To improve the wear resistance of carbon fabric reinforced polyimide (CF/PI) composite, surface-modified graphene (MG) was synthesized and employed as a filler. The flexural strength, Rockwell hardness and thermal properties of the composites were tested. The composites were also evaluated for their tribological properties in a ring-on-block contact mode under dry sliding conditions. The results showed that the wear rate of MG reinforced CF/PI composites was reduced when compared to unfilled CF/PI composite. It was found that the 1 wt% MG filled CF/PI composites exhibited the optimal tribological properties. The worn surface, wear debris and transfer films were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and optical microscopy (OM) with the results helping to characterize the wear mechanism.

The selective N-monomethylation of primary anilines was realized by the use of the Me3N-BH3/N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) system as the methyl source. This method also allows for the controllable introduction of N-CH2D, N-CHD2, and N-CD3 units with high levels of deuterium incorporation using Me3N-BH3/d(7)-DMF, Me3N-BD3/DMF and Me3N-BD3/d(7)-DMF systems, respectively.
