This adaptation of our previously described multicomponent reactionoxidation methodology further showcases manipulation of the diversity elements in multicomponent reaction products via oxidative radical cyclizations, which generates highly decorated privileged heterocycles.

The base-promoted switchable synthesis of five- and six-membered cyclic carbamates using atmospheric pressure carbon dioxide as the C1 source was developed. The chemoselectivity of products was simply controlled by changing bases and solvents. The reaction proceeds effectively under mild conditions, affording valuable cyclic carbamates. Experimental results and DFT studies revealed the reaction mechanism.

The first example of an inorganic-ligand supported iron(iii) catalysed coupling of formic acid and amines to form formamides is reported. The pure inorganic catalyst (NH4)(3)[FeMo6O18(OH)(6)] (1), which consists of a central Fe-III single-atomic core supported within a cycle-shaped inorganic ligand consisting of six (MoO6)-O-VI octahedra, shows excellent activity and selectivity, and avoids the use of complicated/commercially unavailable organic ligands. Various primary amines and secondary amines have been successfully transformed into the corresponding formamides under mild conditions, and the formylation of primary diamines has also been achieved for the first time. The Fe catalyst 1 can be reused several times without appreciable loss of activity.

A simple protocol for the protection of amines was realized through a base-catalyzed one-pot reaction of dimedone, beta-nitroalkene, and amine. Employing this strategy, a variety of amines/amino acids were protected in excellent yields. These acid/base stable protected amines can be deprotected by either ethylene diamine or hydrazine hydrate under mild conditions. A simple and efficient protocol for the formylation of amines with formic acid, catalyzed by a polyoxometalate-based chromium catalyst, is described. Notably, this method shows excellent activity and chemo-selectivity for the formylation of primary amines; diamines have also been successfully employed. Importantly, the chromium catalyst is potentially non-toxic, environmentally benign and safer than the widely used high valence chromium catalysts such as CrO3 and K2Cr2O7. The catalyst can be recycled several times with a negligible impact on activity. Finally, a plausible mechanism is provided based on the observation of intermediate and control experiments.

The first example of a manganese(III) catalyst for the acceptorless dehydrogenation of alcohols is presented. N,N’-Bis(salicylidene)-1,2-cyclohexanediaminomanganese(III) chloride (2) has been shown to catalyze the direct synthesis of imines from a variety of alcohols and amines with the liberation of hydrogen gas. The mechanism has been investigated experimentally with labelled substrates and theoretically with DFT calculations. The results indicate a metal-ligand bifunctional pathway in which both imine groups in the salen ligand are first reduced to form a manganese(III) amido complex as the catalytically active species. Dehydrogenation of the alcohol then takes place by a stepwise outer-sphere hydrogen transfer generating a manganese(III) salan hydride from which hydrogen gas is released.

A new series of fused tricyclic coumarin derivatives were designed, synthesized by a simple and convenient method, starting from 4-hydroxycoumarin and virtually screened by molecular docking on the target protein 3FRZ (PDB ID: 3FRZ), a HCV RNA-dependent RNA polymerase, for potency against hepatitis C virus (HCV).
