An in situ formed cobalt catalyst is developed from cobalt(II)bromide, bis[2-(diisopropylphosphino)-4-methylphenyl]amine and zinc metal. The catalyst mediates the acceptorless dehydrogenative coupling of alcohols and amines into imines with the release of hydrogen gas and the transformation is applied to the synthesis of a variety of imines from different alcohols and amines. The mechanism is investigated with labelled substrates and based on the results a cobalt(I) PNP complex is believed to be the catalytically active species which abstracts hydrogen gas from the alcohol through a metal ligand bifunctional pathway.

Three novel hexacoordinated nickel catalysts containing salicylaldbenzhydrylimine ligand and tetrahydrofuran heterocycle, Ni{(THF) (3-R-1) (5-R-2)C6H2(O)CHNCH(C6H5)(2)}(2), (R-1 = Br, R-2 = H, Ni1; R-1 = Br, R-2 = Br, Ni2; R-1 = Cl, R-2 = Cl, Ni3.), were synthesized and their molecular structures were confirmed by X-ray crystallography. Ni1-Ni3 catalysts exhibited high activities (0.53-2.11 x 10(6) g(polymer)/mol(Ni).h) toward norbornene homopolymerization and high activity (0.29-2.62 x 10(5) g(polymer)/mol(Ni).h) to copolymerization of norbornene and 1-hexene. When the 1-hexene feed ratio was changed from 10 to 70%, the 1-hexene content in the obtained copolymers could be controlled to 8.23-26.58%. The Ni3 with R-1 and R-2 were both electron withdrawing groups (-Cl) on the aromatic ring of salicylaldehyde, showed the highest activity as well as the highest 1-hexene insert ratios. At the same time, only a small amount of B(C6F5)(3) cocatalyst (5 x 10(-5) mol) need to be consumed in the copolymerization process. In addition, the obtained copolymers had a high thermal decomposition temperature (T-d > 386 degrees C) and a low glass transition temperature (T-g = 208.67-237.42 degrees C), which showed that the processability of these polymers was improved while the high thermal decomposition temperature was kept. Without using chiral sources, the Strecker reaction of achiral hydrogen cyanide, p-tolualdehyde and benzhydrylamine gave enantioenriched L- or D-N-benzhydryl-alpha-( p-tolyl) glycine nitriles with up to > 99% ee in a mixed solvent of water and methanol. Therefore, total spontaneous resolution of alpha-aminonitriles could occur through a prebiotic mechanism of alpha-amino acid synthesis. Moreover, it was demonstrated that the repetition of partial dissolution and crystallization of a suspended conglomerate of aminonitrile under solution-phase racemization could generate the enantiomeric imbalance to afford, in combination with the amplification of chirality, an enantioenriched product in every case. Among the 73 experiments that were carried out, D-and L-enriched isomers occurred 36 and 37 times, respectively. This stochastic behavior, under achiral or racemic starting conditions, meets the requirements of the spontaneous absolute asymmetric Strecker synthesis. The implications of the present results for the origin of chirality of alpha-amino acids are discussed.

Here, we report highly enantioselective carbene insertion into N-H bonds of aliphatic amines using two catalysts in tandem: an achiral copper complex and chiral amino-thiourea. Coordination by a homoscorpionate ligand protects the copper center that activates the carbene precursor. The chiral amino-thiourea catalyst then promotes enantioselective proton transfer to generate the stereocenter of the insertion product. This reaction couples a wide variety of diazo esters and amines to produce chiral alpha-alkyl alpha-amino acid derivatives.

The direct catalytic dehydrative amidation of beta-hydroxycarboxylic acids with amines is described. A biphenyl-based diboronic acid anhydride with a B-O-B skeleton is shown to be an exceptionally effective catalyst for the reaction, providing beta-hydroxycarboxylic amides in high to excellent yields with a low catalyst loading (minimum of 0.01 mol %, TON up to 7,500). This hydroxy-directed amidation shows excellent chemoselectivity and is applicable to gram-scale drug synthesis.

The first example of a manganese(III) catalyst for the acceptorless dehydrogenation of alcohols is presented. N,N’-Bis(salicylidene)-1,2-cyclohexanediaminomanganese(III) chloride (2) has been shown to catalyze the direct synthesis of imines from a variety of alcohols and amines with the liberation of hydrogen gas. The mechanism has been investigated experimentally with labelled substrates and theoretically with DFT calculations. The results indicate a metal-ligand bifunctional pathway in which both imine groups in the salen ligand are first reduced to form a manganese(III) amido complex as the catalytically active species. Dehydrogenation of the alcohol then takes place by a stepwise outer-sphere hydrogen transfer generating a manganese(III) salan hydride from which hydrogen gas is released.

Herein, we broaden the application scope of (cyclopentadienone)iron complexes 1 in C=N bond reduction. The catalytic scope of pre-catalyst 1b, which is more active than the Knolker complex (1a) and other members of its family, has been expanded to the catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) of a wider range of aldimines and ketimines, either pre-isolated or generated in situ. The kinetics of 1b-promoted CTH of ketimine S1 were assessed, showing a pseudo-first order profile, with TOF = 6.07 h(-1) at 50 % conversion. Moreover, the chiral complex 1c and its analog 1d were employed in the enantioselective reduction of ketimines and reductive amination of ketones, giving fair to good yields and moderate enantioselectivity.
