Evaluating the Effectiveness of Tamarindus Indica Partially Activated Seed Coat Biomass in Removing of Nitrates from Aqueous Solutions

Biomass derived from Tamarindus indica partially activated seed coat was investigated for the removal of nitrate ions from aqueous solutions. Batch experiments were performed to evaluate the parameters like pH, contact time, sorbent dose and initial nitrate concentration. pH of the solution played vital role. The maximum sorption observed at pH=7, sorbent dose 300mg, contact time at 120min, initial nitrate concentration 5mg. Physicochemical properties of the biomass were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis and Fourier Transform infra red (FTIR) spectroscopy. The SEM and FTIR data reveals the suitable surface and the presence of chemical functional groups such as hydroxyl, amide, carbonyl strong acid and primary amine on the biosorbent surface contributes to biosorption. The equilibrium isotherms and kinetics were deliberated. Biosorption equilibrium followed Langmuir isotherm. Pseudo second order kinetics provided better correlation of the experimental data in comparison with pseudo-first-order kinetic model. The study indicated that Tamarindus indica partially activated seed coat biomass found to be a novel biosorbent for the removal of nitrates from aqueous solutions.

Synthesis and Characterization of Poly(ester amide)s Consisting of Poly(L-lactic acid) and Poly(butylene succinate) Segments with 2,2 ‘-Bis(2-oxazoline) Chain Extending

An aliphatic polyester based poly(ester amide)s (PEA) consisting of poly (L-lactic acid) and poly(butylene succinate) was successfully prepared via chain extension reaction of poly(L-lactic acid)-dicarboxylic acid (PLLA-COOH) and poly(butylene succinate)-dicarboxylic acid (PBS-COOH) using 2,2-bis(2-oxazoline) as a chain extender. PLLA-COOH was obtained by direct polycondensation of L-lactic acid in the presence of 1, 4-succinic acid. PBS-COOH was synthesized by condensation polymerization of 1,4-butylene glycol with excessive succinic acid. The structures of PLLA-COOH, PBS-COOH, and PEAs were characterized by fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and H-1 nuclear magnetic resonance (H-1 NMR). The molar masses were determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The thermal properties of PLLA-COOH, PBS-COOH, and PEAs were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The lattice parameters of PLLA-COOH, PBS-COOH, and PEAs were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Furthermore, The mechanical properties were characterized by tensile testing and notch Izod impact testing. The FTIR and H-1 NMR results demonstrated the formation of PLLA-COOH, PBS-COOH, and PEAs. The GPC measurements showed that the molar masses of copolymer PEAs decreased with increasing PBS-COOH content. The TGA analysis confirmed that the introduction of PBS improved the thermal properties. DSC data indicated that the melting temperatures of the PEAs were lower than that of the prepolymers. The results of XRD suggested that the PLLA crystal structures was destroyed by the PBS units, and the crystallization of the PEAs mainly attributed to the PBS chain segments.The introduction of PBS units into the polymer structure improved the toughness of PLLA, which was detected in mechanical properties.

Asymmetric Total Synthesis and Biological Evaluation of Proapoptotic Natural Myrcene-Derived Cyclohexenyl Chalcones

Self-Cross-Linking p(APM-co-AA) Microstructured Thin Films as Biomimetic Scaffolds

In nature, cells reside within an extracellular matrix (ECM) that provides biophysical and biochemical cues to direct cell development and behavior. Traditional methods for studying cells involve using in vitro models that are convenient and cost-effective, but often use two-dimensional supports that are poor mimics for three-dimensional natural cell microenvironments. In this work, a synthetic polyampho-lyte, p(APM-co-AA) [poly(N-(3-aminopropyl)methacrylamide hydrochloride-co-acrylic acid)], was coated onto prestressed polystyrene support films that were then thermally shrunken, which concomitantly induced self-cross-linking of the polyampholyte. The cross-linking process involved a two-step sequence of anhydride formation from pairs of adjacent acrylic acid units, followed by amide cross-linking through reaction with primary amines on other chains. Attenuated reflectance infrared spectroscopy (ATR-IR) confirmed the formation of anhydride and amide bonds during heating, and the cross-linked films remained intact in cell culture media and basic solutions. Furthermore, the compressive stress from the shrinking substrate wrinkled the polyampholyte film, producing 3D scaffolds that were used to study the effect of topography on cell cultures. Cell viability tests confirmed the noncytotoxicity of the microstructured polyampholyte films. The surface wettability of the films was tuned by postfunctionalizing with different amines, with decylamine-functionalized films showing decreased fibroblast attachment, and D-glucamine-functionalized films showing reduced fibroblast spreading, compared to the control. Furthermore, the topography of the p(APM-co-AA) scaffolds could be tuned by changing the polyampholyte film thickness. Different topographies of the microstructured films elicited different fibroblast morphologies, with larger structures contributing to less complex cell boundaries, lower cell areas, and higher cell circularities. Overall, this tunable, self-cross-linking p(APM-co-AA) system can be fabricated into microstructured films, which can be used to study the effects of surface chemistry, topography, and other physical properties of biomimetic scaffolds on cell behavior and contribute to the library of existing biomimetic scaffolds.

The sensor linearly responded to Pb2+ concentration in the range of 5-80 mu g/L with a detection limit of 0.6 mu g/L, indicating that this L-cysteine functionalized Au@SiO2@Fe3O4/NG composite could be a promising candidate material for the detection of Pb2+.

Intermolecular interaction in the hybrid gel of scallop (Patinopecten yessoensis) male gonad hydrolysates and kappa-carrageenan

Various bond disrupting agents including NaCl, GuHCl, urea, and SDS were introduced to investigate the intermolecular interactions between scallop (Patinopecten yessoensis) male gonad hydrolysates (SMGHs) and kappa-carrageenan (kappa-C), which were monitored by changes in rheological property, water distribution, conformation characterization and microstructure by using rheometer, low field-NMR relaxometry, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, cryo-scanning electron microscopy (cryo-SEM), and confocal laser scanning microscopy. The results showed that the bond disrupting agents deteriorated the rheological property of SMGHs/kappa-C in a dose-dependent manner. Indeed, at the same concentration of 2 M, NaCl deteriorated the SMGHs/kappa-C more obviously than GuHCl and urea. In addition, SMGHs/kappa-C with bond disrupting agents possessed higher relaxation times including T-21 and T-23, indicating the migration to free water direction of bound and free water. Moreover, the FITR results showed the red-shift in water regions (amide A and B bands), amide I and II bands, and indicated the breakdown of hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interactions, indicating a disordered structure in SMGHs/kappa-C by various bond disrupting agents. Furthermore, cryo-SEM results showed the change of SMGHs/kappa-C from a homogeneous network to a looser and ruptured one with larger void spaces, and indicated the disrupted and tattered microstructure of SMGHs/kappa-C by various bond disrupting agents. Additionally, SMGHs/kappa-C as well showed less aggregates stained by RITC by bond disrupting agents. These results suggest that electrostatic interactions would be mainly involved in the maintenance of SMGHs/kappa-C gel network. This study could provide theoretical and methodological basis for hydrogel products with modified gel strength and microstructure by understanding the intermolecular interactions in gel system. Clustering-triggered Emission of Nonaromatic Polymers with Multitype Heteroatoms and Effective Hydrogen Bonding

Nonconventional luminophores without large conjugated structures are attracting increasing attention for their unique aggregation-induced emission(AIE) properties and promising applications in optoelectronic and biomedical areas. The emission mechanism, however, remains elusive, which makes rational molecular design difficult. Recently, we proposed the clustering-triggered emission(CTE) mechanism to illustrate the emission. The clustering of electron-rich nonconventional chromophores with pi and/or n electrons and consequent electron cloud overlap is crucial to the luminescence. Herein, based on the CTE mechanism, nonaromatic polymers containing multitype heteroatoms(i.e., O, N, and S) and involving amide(CONH) and sulfide(-S-) groups were designed and synthesized through facile thiol-ene click chemistry. The resulting polymers demonstrated typical concentration-enhanced emission, AIE phenomenon, and excitation-dependent emission. Notably, compared with polysulfides, these polymers exhibited much higher solid-state emission efficiencies, because of the incorporation of amide units, which contributed to the formation of emissive clusters with highly rigidified conformations through effective hydrogen bonding. Furthermore, distinct persistent cryogenic phosphorescence or even room temperature phosphorescence(RTP) was noticed. These photophysical behaviors can well be rationalized in terms of the CTE mechanism, indicating the feasibility of rational molecular design and luminescence regulation.

The effect of terminal groups and halogenation of KLVFF peptide on its activity as an inhibitor of beta-amyloid aggregation

The aggregation of A beta peptide into amyloid fibrils in the brain is associated with Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Inhibition of A beta aggregation seemed a potential treatment for AD. It was previously shown that a short fragment of A beta peptide (KLVFF, 16-20) bound A beta inhibited its aggregation. In this work, using KLVFF peptide, we synthesized two peptide families and then evaluated their inhibitory capacities by conventional assays such as thioflavin T (ThT) fluorescence spectroscopy, turbidity measurement, and the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-5-(3-carboxymethoxyphenyl)-2-(4-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium (MTS). The effect of peptide terminal groups on its inhibitory activity was first studied. Subsequently, the influence of halogenated amino acids on peptide anti-aggregation properties was investigated. We found that iodinated peptide with amine in the N and amide in the C termini, respectively, was the best inhibitor of A beta fibers formation. Halogenated peptides seemed to decrease the number of A beta fibrils; however, they did not reduce A beta cytotoxicity. The data obtained in this work seemed promising in developing potential peptide drugs for treatment of AD.

Synthesis of Fmoc-Protected Amino Alcohols via the Sharpless Asymmetric Aminohydroxylation Reaction Using FmocNHCl as the Nitrogen Source

The aminohydroxylation of various alkenes using FmocNHCl as a nitrogen source is reported. In general, in the absence of a ligand, the reaction provided racemic Fmoc-protected amino alcohols with excellent regioselectivity but in low to moderate yields. However, in some instances, the yield of an amino alcohol product and the regioselectivity could be altered by the addition of a catalytic amount of triethylamine (TEA). The Sharpless asymmetric variant of this reaction (Sharpless asymmetric aminohydroxylation (SAAH)), using (DHQD)(2)PHAL (DHQD) or (DHQ)(2)PHAL (DHQ) as chiral ligands, proceeded more readily and in higher yield compared to the same reaction in the absence of a chiral ligand. The enantiomeric ratios (er) of all but two examples exceeded 90:10 with many examples giving er values of 95:5 or higher, making FmocNHCl a highly practical reagent for preparing chiral amino alcohols. The SAAH reaction using FmocNHCl was used for the preparation of D-threo-beta-hydroxyasparagine and D-threo-beta-methoxyaspartate, suitably protected for Fmoc solid phase peptide synthesis.
