Two novel enantiopure styrene derivatives (L- and D-1) bearing the chiral amide groups were designed and synthesized. The polymerization of these monomers using the reversible addition fragment transfer (RAFT) radical polymerization afforded a series of poly-L-1(m)s and poly-D-1(m)s in high yields with controlled molecular weights (M(n)s) and narrow molecular weight distributions (M-w/M-ns). Interestingly, these polymers could adopt a stable helical conformation when the degree of the polymerization reached ca. 60 owing to the intramolecular hydrogen bonding between the adjacent repeating units as revealed by circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, and polarimetry. The helicity of these polymers could be tuned via solvent and temperature alterations. Increasing the temperature or the polarity of the solvents weakens the intramolecular hydrogen bonding, and thus the helical structure may transform to a random coil, endowing these polymers with multi-responsiveness. Moreover, such helical polymers could be further copolymerized with a cross linker, leading to the formation of a core cross-linked star polymer carrying the helical arms. Because of the chirality of the helical arms, the star polymer showed an excellent ability in enantioselective crystallization using racemic D/L-threonine as the model compounds. The enantiomeric excess (ee) of the induced crystals was up to 95%.

Nitrites are the upstream precursors of the carcinogenic nitrosamines, which are widely found in the natural environment and many food products. It is important to develop a simple and sensitive sensor for detecting nitrites. In this work, a fluorescence probe based on nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) was developed for the sensitive and selective determination of nitrites. At pH 2, the fluorescence of N-CQDs can be selectively quenched by nitrite due to the fact N-nitroso compounds can be formed in the reaction of amide groups with nitrous acid, which results in fluorescence static quenching. Under optimal conditions, fluorescence intensity quenching upon addition of nitrite gives a satisfactory linear relationship covering the linear range of 0.2-20 M, and the limit of detection (LOD) is 40 nM. Moreover, this method has been successfully applied to the determination of nitrites in tap water, which indicates its great potential for monitoring of nitrites in environmental samples.

New anti-hepatocellular injury drugs with better curative effects and fewer side effects are urgently needed at present. In this study, a series of novel N-acetylcysteine (NAC) derivatives were designed, synthesized and biologically evaluated for their anti-hepatocellular injury activities against two different cell models. In the biological evaluation against hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-induced LO2 hepatocytes, half of the target compounds exhibited moderate to potent activities in improving the model cell viability, and two compounds (6a and 6b) displayed more potent activities in decreasing malondialdehyde (MDA) levels than the positive control NAC. In further 4-acetamidophenol (APAP)-induced LO2 cell experiment, compounds 6a and 6b could not only improve the cell viability but also significantly reduce the secretion of MDA. Additionally, compound 6a displayed excellent Caco-2 permeability and oral bioavailability in rats. All these experimental results suggested that compounds 6a and 6b could serve as potential lead molecules for further development of anti-hepatocellular injury drugs.

The present study was focused on evaluating the bioenergy potential of waste biomass of desert plant Calotropis procera. The biomass was pyrolyzed at four heating rates including 10 degrees Cmin(-1), 20 degrees Cmin(-1), 40 degrees Cmin(-1), and 80 degrees Cmin(-1). The narrow range of pre-exponential factors indicated a uniform pyrolysis, while lower differences between enthalpy change and activation energies indicated that reactions were thermodynamically favorable. The evolved gases were dominated by propanoic acid, 3-hydroxy-, hydrazide, hydrazinecarboxamide and carbohydrazide followed by amines/amides, alcohols, acids, aldehydes/ketones, and esters.

In searching for novel fungicidal leads, the novel bioactive succinate dehydrogenase inhibitor (SDHI) derivatives were designed and synthesized by the inversion of carbonyl and amide groups. Bioassay indicated that compound 5i stood out with a broad spectrum of in vitro activity against five fungi. Its EC50 value (0.73 mu g/mL) was comparable to that of boscalid (EC50 of 0.51 mu g/mL) and fluxapyroxad (EC50 of 0.19 mu g/mL) against Sclerotinia sclerotiorum. For Rhizoctonia cerealis, 5i and 5p with EC50 values of 4.61 and 6.48 mu g/mL, respectively, showed significantly higher activity than fluxapyroxad with the EC(50 )value of 16.99 mu g/mL. In vivo fungicidal activity of 5i exhibited an excellent inhibitory rate (100%) against Puccinia sorghi at 50 mu g/mL, while the positive control boscalid showed only a 70% inhibitory rate. Moreover, 5i showed promising fungicidal activity with a 60% inhibitory rate against Rhizoctonia solani at 1 mu g/mL, which was better than that of boscalid (30%). Compound 5i possessed better in vivo efficacy against P. sorghi and R. solani than boscalid. Molecular docking showed that even the carbonyl oxygen atom of Si was far from the pyrazole ring. It could also form hydrogen bonds toward the hydroxyl hydrogen and amino hydrogen of TYR58 and TRP173 on SDH, respectively, which consisted of the positive control fluxapyroxad. Fluorescence quenching analysis and SDH enzymatic inhibition studies also validated its mode of action. Our studies showed that 5i was worthy of further investigation as a promising fungicide candidate.

In this current study, through a pharmacophore assisted high throughput virtual screening, we report a novel sQC inhibitor (Cpd-41) with a piperidine-4-carboxamide moiety (IC50 = 34 mu M). Systematic molecular docking, MD simulations and X-ray crystallographic analysis provided atomistic details of the binding of Cpd-41 in the active site of sQC. In technological front, ILs revealed a potential ability for the removal of dyes, heavy metals and phenolic compounds owing to their hydrophobic nature on investigating via liquid -liquid extraction method. The effect of contact time, solution pH and initial concentration of dyes were investigated and the result show that adsorption of dyes increases with increasing contact time and gets maximum decolourisation at acidic pH and pH 7. The extraction process of heavy metals with the ILs were investigated and were assessed using the techniques UV-Visible spectroscopy and ICP-MS (Inductive Coupled Plasma Mass Spectroscopy). The three ILs showed best extraction efficiency (approx. 100%) for all heavy metals and the dyes using proposed methodology. UV-Visible Spectroscopy quantification method was employed to analyse extracted phenolic compounds. Screening results of phenolic compounds have shown that [PC6C6C6C14][Cl] IL exhibited the capacity intake of 100% efficiency from rice and cashew industrial waste water. The Its were characterized with thermogravimetry (TGA) and from which, the samples showed a good thermal stability up to 573 K to project them as promising one for high temperature needs in various technological fronts.
