The antidiabetic actions of [A14K]PGLa-AM1, an analog of peptide glycine-leucine-amide-AM1 isolated from skin secretions of the octoploid frog Xenopus amieti, were investigated in genetically diabetic-obese db/db mice. Soil organic matter (SOM) could immobilize most of metals, but it could promote the migration of a small part of metals in special environments. Heavy rainfall and drought makes wetlands affected by the alternation of drought and flood, altering the mobility of metals. Few studies have been conducted on the changes of binding characteristics of metals onto SOM which derived from different water conditions and rhizospheric environments. The objective of this paper was to explore the sequential differences of spectral variations of fluorescent groups and UV-Vis groups of metals onto SOM which derived from different water managements and rhizospheric environments. The method adopted was mainly two-dimensional correlation analysis (2DCOS). The results showed that flooding samples contained more aromatic substances compared to draining samples, which could promote metal binding. The binding characteristics were shown in the following: (1) Cd2+ and Zn2+ could react with aromatic substances, react with functional groups in SOM, and promote the formation of new groups such as carboxyl; (2) both Zn2+ and Cd2+ could bind with functional groups on proteins but relatively reductive environment can weaken the binding ability of Cd2+ ; (3) the protein-like or fulvic-like groups gave the fastest responses and then came the amide and carboxyl groups in nearly all flooding samples; (4) in flooding samples, Cd2+ was most easily to bind with fulvic-like groups, while Zn2+ was most easily to bind with protein-like groups. This work is conducive to the long-term management of heavy metal pollutants in wetlands.

Two structurally isomeric azobenzene-and cholesteryl-based derivatives with varying alkyl chain lengths were developed as ALS-type gelators (N2 and N4) and synthesized and characterized spectroscopically. Of the two, N4 acted as a more efficient gelator than N2 since N4 could gel a larger number of solvents. The critical gelation concentration (CGC) of N4 was found to be less than that of N2 in the same solvent system. The morphological analyses of both gelators using SEM and TEM revealed that N4 exhibited self-assembled fibrous structures, whereas N2 exhibited spherical nanoparticles. The van der Waals interactions between the cholesteryl units, hydrogen bonding between the amide linkages and p-p stacking between the azobenzene units provided the driving force for the aggregation and gel formation. These driving forces were evidenced by temperature dependent H-1-NMR, FTIR and XRD analyses. Increasing the temperature of the gels shifted (upfield and downfield) the protons in the H-1-NMR spectra as well as the absorption bands in the FTIR spectra indicating that the intermolecular forces between the molecules became disrupted and caused gel -> sol transitions. These transitions were reversible after cooling to room temperature. Similarly, the gel -> sol transitions could be triggered by UV light (due to trans/cis isomerization); however, the transition was irreversible in the presence of visible light due to the formation of the more stable cis isomer. Hence, the gel state could be retained by heating and cooling the cis-conformation. In addition, the length of the molecule as determined by simulation software was found to match the values observed from the XRD analysis, and the interlayer distances were found to be 1.78 and 1.85 nm for N2 and N4, respectively. Based on this evidence, an aggregation mechanism was proposed. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM) results revealed that both gelators exhibited grainy nematic mesophase textures during the heating and cooling cycles. These gelators underwent phase-selective gelation in the solvent mixtures containing gelling and nongelling solvents, which demonstrated the applicability of these gelators for the separation and purification of solvents.

In this study, we describe the application of a transformed Chlamydia trachomatis strain constitutively expressing the red fluorescent protein mCherry, to allow real-time monitoring of the infection cycle and screening for agents that block replication of C. trachomatis. The present study deals with a gram-positive and rod-shaped bacterium SCRB 19 isolated from chromium contaminated tannery wastewater of common effluent treatment plant (CETP), Kanpur (U.P), India. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing investigation, the bacterium was recognized as Microbacterium paraoxydans. This bacterium exhibits relatively elevated tolerance to Cr(VI) (<= 1000 mg/L). The effect of Alcalase hydrolysis on structure and peptide profiles of garden cress (GC) (Lepidium sativum) protein concentrate was investigated.
