A novel easy-to-prepare magnetic catalyst, composed of palladium nanoparticles supported on surface-oxidized carbon-encapsulated iron nanoparticles, has been synthesized. The synthesis involved the reduction of palladium precursor in the presence of magnetic core-shell nanomaterial. The size of the palladium nanoparticles distributed over the support does not exceed 15 nm. The catalytic performance of this composite material was tested in hydrogenation of seven various nitro compounds to the respective amino derivatives. The composite exhibits excellent catalytic activity and can be easily separated from the reaction mixture after the reaction. The determined reaction yields were above 90 % and this value was not worsened even after ten cycles, for the case of hydrogenation of nitrobenzene. Importantly, the method is chromatography-free and employs the ammonium formate as a hydrogen source, which makes the herein presented protocol safer in comparison with the previously reported reductions in which highly dangerous gaseous hydrogen was used.

Fe-catalyzed direct transformation of benzylic amines into carbonyl compounds was performed in H2O. The reaction of benzylic amines with formaldehyde in the presence of FeCl3 center dot 6H(2)O in H2O afforded the corresponding carbonyl compounds (80 degrees C to reflux conditions; 14 examples, up to 94% yield). O-18-labeling experiments indicated that the O atom in the generated carbonyl is derived from H2O.

A stereoselective amination/cyclization cascade process has been developed that allows for the preparation of a series of unsaturated and substituted caprolactam derivatives in good yields. This conceptually novel protocol takes advantage of the easy access and modular character of vinyl gamma-lactones that can be prepared from simple precursors. Activation of the lactone substrate in the presence of a suitable Pd precursor and newly developed phosphoramidite ligand offers a stereocontrolled ring-opening/allylic amination manifold under ambient conditions. The intermediate (E)-configured epsilon-amino acid can be cyclized using a suitable dehydrating agent in an efficient one-pot, two-step sequence. This overall highly chemo-, stereo- and regio-selective transformation streamlines the production of a wide variety of modifiable and valuable caprolactam building blocks in an operationally attractive way.

Insect-microbial symbioses have vast biochemical diversity, which is beneficial to produce bioactive secondary metabolites. In this study, chemical examination of a Streptomyces sp. associated with a mud dauber wasp led to the isolation of fourteen compounds. Their structures were determined by spectroscopic methods and comparison with literature data. Among the isolates, compounds 1,2,3-benzotriazin-4(1H)-one and 4-(2-aminoethyl)phenyl acetate were first reported from this species. Bioactivities of the isolated compounds were assayed for the first time against hexokinase II. 4-(2-Aminoethyl)phenyl acetate, germicidin B, phenylacetic acid, isogermicidin A and germicidin C displayed significant inhibitory activity against hexokinase II, with the IC50 values of 5.11, 7.11, 7.15, 8.45 and 8.78 mu M, respectively.

Sustainable development demands an environmentally friendly and efficient method for the hydrogenation of organic molecules, including the hydrogenation of functionalized nitroarenes. In this study, a highly active and selective metal-organic framework-supported palladium catalyst was prepared for the catalytic hydrogenation of nitroarenes. High selectivity (>99%) and excellent yield (98%) of aniline were realized after 2 hours in ethanol under hydrogen (1 atm) at room temperature. The reductions were successfully carried out in the presence of a wide range of other reducible functional groups. More importantly, the catalyst was very stable without the loss of its catalytic activity after five cycles.

Perylenediimides (PDIs) have emerged as potential materials for optoelectronic applications. In the current work, four PDI derivatives, substituted at imide nitrogen with 2,6-diisopropyl phenyl, 2-nitrophenyl, diphenylmethylene, and pentafluorophenyl groups, have been synthesized from perylene 3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic dianhydride using a facile imidization synthesis process. PDI derivatives have been spectroscopically characterized for their structure and optical properties. Temperature-variable absorption and emission spectroscopy study confirmed the H-aggregation property. H-aggregation along with strong emission suggests the slipped pi-pi stacking of PDI molecules. Electrochemical analysis was performed for their redox behavior and calculation of lowest unoccupied molecular orbital and highest occupied molecular orbital energy levels. Scanning electron microscopy showed the formation of ordered structures. The PDI derivatives showed excellent electron conductivity without doping and 5-10x higher electron mobility than that of state-of-the-art fullerene acceptor phenyl-C-61 -butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM). Finally, the charge generation and charge transfer phenomenon was studied by transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS). TAS showed ultrafast charge transfer from the poly(3-hexyl)thiophene (P3HT) donor polymer to PDI and formation of long-lived charge-separated states similar to fullerene derivative PC61 BM/P3HT blends. Such PDI derivatives with excellent solubility and photophysical and electronic properties are potential n-type materials to be used in organic electronic devices.

In one-pot strategy, diazotization of methyl anthranilate 5 followed by addition of amino acid ester hydrochloride, we have prepared methyl-2-(4-oxobenzotriazin-3(4H)-yl)-alkanoates 6a-c. Starting with hydrazides 7a,b, N-alkyl-2-(4-oxobenzotriazin-3(4H)-yl)-alkanamides 9-10(a-h) and methyl-2-(2-(4-oxobenzotriazin-3(4H)-yl)alkanamido)alkanoates 11- 12(a-e) were prepared via azide coupling. Hydrazones 13-15 were prepared via condensation of hydrazides 7a,b with 4-methoxybenzaldehyde, 4-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde, and/or arabinose. Molecular docking was done for synthesized compounds using MOE 2008-10 software. The compounds 9a, 12a, 12c, 13a, 13b, and 14b have the most pronounced strong binding affinities toward the target E. coli Fab-H receptor, whereas compounds 3, 11e, 12e, and 13a have the most pronounced strong binding affinities toward the target vitamin D receptor. The in vitro antibacterial activities of the highest binding affinity docked compounds were tested against E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Salmonella spp. Majority of the tested compounds showed effective positive results against E. coli, while they were almost inactive against Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella spp. The in vitro cytotoxic activities of the highest binding affinity-docked compounds were tested against the human liver carcinoma cell line (HepG2). Some compounds showed potent cytotoxic activity with low IC50 values, especially for 3 (6.525 mu M) and 13a (10.97 mu M) than that for standard drug doxorubicin (2.06 mu M).

The aldol reaction which is the most important one among the C-C bond forming reactions, is widely used by synthetic organic chemists to obtain beta-hydroxycarbonyl compounds which are important starting components for biologically active compounds in optically pure form. In this research, five Pro-Phe derivatives were synthesized by simple amidation reactions and characterized by their spectral data. Their catalytic activities in asymmetric aldol reaction were investigated. The catalytic activity studies were performed with aliphatic ketones and various aromatic aldehydes. Especially, (S)methyl 3-mercapto-2-(S)-3-phenyl-2-((S)-pyrrolidine-2-carboxamido)propanamido)propanoate showed good catalytic activities in water at 0 degrees C in the presence of p-nitrobenzoic acid cocatalyst. The enantioselectivities were up to 90.4%, the diastereomeric ratios were up to 97/3 and yields were 99%. The results showed that these organocatalysts were promising organocatalysts for aldol reaction. Besides, this catalyst showed its best catalytic activities in water which is also an important contribution to green chemistry requirements.

The total synthesis of cyclic depsipeptide Met(10)-teixobactin in solution-phase is described. Teixobactin is a structurally and mechanistically novel antimicrobial peptidic natural product with very impressive activities against Gram-positive pathogens. It happens to possess an L-allo-enduracididine (End) residue as part of macrocyclic ring which is not readily accessible. In this report, we have used serine ligation strategy as the key step to prepare an analogue of teixobactin where End being replaced with a readily available amino acid methionine.
