Silica gel flash chromatography of the crude product (hexanes-ethyl acetate (10:1) to hexanes-ethyl acetate (4:1)) yielded pure imide 2a (45 mg, 0.22 mmol, 88% yield) together with unreacted 1a (3.2 mg, 0.017 mmol, 7%).
