Macrocyclic peptide-mimetic molecules are attracting renewed attention and have found widespread application in research fields ranging from biochemical science to materials science. Herein, we describe the synthesis and structural elucidation of cyclo[n]-p-arylopeptoids (classified into cyclic aromatic epsilon-amino acids) bearing various side chains, namely, C[n]pAP(R-n) (where n inside brackets denotes the number of main chain units and R inside parentheses represents side chains). We investigate the influence of n and R on the macrocyclization efficiency of linear p-arylopeptoid oligomers (n 3, 4, 5) under high-dilution conditions with or without slow addition. The structures of the cyclo[4]-p-arylopeptoids (C[4]pAP(R-n)) and their conformational dynamics are disclosed on the basis of single-crystal X-ray analyses, viable-temperature ((VT) H-1 NMR studies, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We found two representative conformations (open and closed) of cyclo[4]-p-arylopeptoids (C[4]pAP(R-n)) in the solid state and whose preference in the solution state was most likely dependent on solvent polarity. We believe that this simple but dynamic macrocyclic peptide-mimetic molecular scaffold would be attractive for developing new functional molecular tools based on rational molecular design as well as molecular library screening strategies.

Tyrosine kinases including LCK and FMS are involved in inflammatory disorders as well as many types of cancer. There are several differentiation methods for mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) into hepatocyte-like cell. In the explant method, valuable time is wasted, but the cost and biological contaminations are reduced and the number of isolated cells is high. However, other features, such as immune phenotype and multiline-age differentiation capacity, do not differ from other methods. There are also several differentiation methods for hepatocyte-like cell including the induction of MSC by cytokines and growth factors, and the differentiation of MSC in 2- and 3-dimensional matrix (2D and 3D). Among several cytokines, hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) and fibroblast growth factor (FGF) are essential. In the early stage of the differentiation, 2D culture is useful, and in the development stage, 3D culture system with HGF and FGF cytokines are more effective in the process of differentiation. Some studies have used 3D culture system in biocompatible scaffolds, such as alginate, collagen, gelatin, and peptide-Gly-Leu-amide (PGLA). In conclusion, Wharton’s jelly-Mesenchymal stem cells (WJ-MSCs) can be considered as an appropriate source for hepatocyte differentiation. Moreover, we introduced the explant method as the most effective protocol. This review attempted to highlight factors in hepatocyte differentiation, but the most effective protocol is not still unknown.

The mechanical stability of conventional single-channel capillary fibres can be improved in a multi-channel geometry, which has previously found application in ultrafiltration. In this work, multi-channel polyethersulfone (PES) capillary membranes comprising seven feed channels were successfully fabricated in an enhanced steam-dry-wet spinning process and coated on the inner surface with a thin polyamide (PA) layer via interfacial polymerization (IP). The coating procedure consisted of impregnating the support multi-channel capillary membranes (MCM) with an aqueous piperazine solution, flushing with nitrogen gas to remove excess droplets, and pumping an organic trimesoylchloride solution through the channels. Insights into the interfacial polymerization process were gained through the investigation of various parameters, including monomer ratio, contact time, and drying time. Membranes were characterised via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and filtration experiments. The optimisation of both the PES support membrane and IP process parameters allowed for the fabrication of composite MCM with an MgSO4 rejection of 91.4% and a solute flux of 68.8 L m(-2) h(-1) at an applied pressure of 3 bar. The fabricated composite MCM demonstrates that a favourable multi-channel arrangement can be upgraded with a PA layer for application in low-pressure nanofiltration.
