Thin films with (nano)fibrillar morphologies were successfully obtained in fully-biobased poly(butylene succinate-co-adipate)/poly(amide-11) blends (PBSA/PA11, 85/15 wt/wt) using an extrusion-blowing process. A specific attention was finally paid to the PBSA strain-hardening behavior in PBSA/PA11 using elongational rheological tests. PA11 (nano)fibrillation helps maintaining the strong PBSA strain-hardening and thus play a major role on the processability of PBSA/PA11 blends by extrusion blowing. As a conclusion, the PA11 grade represents a crucial parameter to control the production of PBSA/PA11 blown films with refined (nano)fibrillar structures and enhanced physico-chemical properties.

Thermal degradation under wet conditions is considered as an important aging mechanism in polyamide 6,6 (PA 6,6). The effect of water on thermal degradation of amorphous PA 6,6 is investigated at relatively low temperatures, varying from 1000 to 2000 K, using reactive force field molecular dynamics (MD) and collective variable-driven hyperdynamics simulations. The simulation of the related long-term chemical reactions is made possible thanks to the self-learning accelerated MD concept of hyperdynamics in combination with the corresponding accurate reproduction of the correct dynamics, consistent with unbiased MD simulations. The kinetics of cleavage reactions of the amide bonds in the backbone of the polymer chains, responsible for the thermal degradation of the polymer, is studied, and the influence of water content on the activation energy and pre-exponential factor of the cleavage reactions is explored. The results show that activation energy and pre-exponential factor are in agreement with experimental data. The proposed simulation framework not only estimates kinetic properties of thermal degradation that are consistent with experimental observations but also provides a predictive tool for studying long-term thermal degradation of PA 6,6.

UV-visible spectroscopic experiments have revealed that the TFSA(-) anions that initially combine with Ni2+ in the IL are replaced with ML molecules in the IL-ML systems in three steps with increasing ML content. The electron donicities of the three MLs are larger in the order of DMSO > MeOH > AN. However, the stability of each complex does not simply depend on this order; the stability is higher in the order of [Ni(dmso)(n)] > [Ni(an)(n)](4) [Ni(meoh)(n)]. In other words, the stability of the MeOH complexes is lower than that of the AN ones, despite the higher electron donicity of MeOH. The reasons for the order of the complex stabilities have been interpreted on the molecular scale, according to the stepwise enthalpies Lambda H-n(0) and entropies T Lambda S-0(n) determined, together with the strength of the hydrogen bonding between the MLs and the imidazolium ring and the formation of MeOH clusters in [C(2)mim][TFSA].

Formation of gas hydrates is a problem in the petroleum industry where the gas hydrates can cause blockage of the flowlines. Kinetic hydrate inhibitors (KHIs) are water-soluble polymers, sometimes used in combination synergistically or with nonpolymeric synergists, that are used to prevent gas hydrate blockages. They have been used in the field successfully since 1995. In this paper, we present the first KHI results for the polymer, poly(3-methylene-2-pyrrolidone) (P(3M2P)), which is structurally similar to poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP), one of the first KHIs to be discovered. 3M2P polymers with different molecular weights (5500 and 2500 g/mol) and at different concentrations (2500, 5000, and 7500 ppm) were investigated for their KHI performance on structure II hydrates in high-pressure rocking cells. We also investigated the synergistic effect of P(3M2P) with n-butyl glycol ether (BGE), a known synergist for some KHI polymers. At the lower concentrations, P(3M2P) gives a similar performance to PVP (M-w = 8000-9000 g/mol). However, PVP outperforms both samples of P(3M2P) at 7500 ppm, with and without BGE. We suggest that the reasons for the performance level of P(3M2P) are related to greater resonance stabilization of the amide group in P(3M2P) compared to PVP. Also, the pyrrolidone ring of the PVP repeat unit has a larger hydrophobic sequence of three methylene units compared to the two methylene units in the pyrrolidone ring of P(3M2P). This relates well to previous studies where larger hydrophobic groups are preferable in KHI polymers as long as they are water-soluble at hydrate-forming temperatures.

The present study explored the protective effects of cannabinoid receptor agonist WIN55,212-2 (WIN) and fatty acid amide hydrolase inhibitor URB597 (URB) against neuroinflammation in rats with chronic cerebral hypoperfusion (CCH). Activated microglia, astrocytes, and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kappa B) p65-positive cells were measured by immunofluorescence. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) was assessed by dihydroethidium staining. The protein levels of cluster of differentiation molecule 11b (OX-42), glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), NF-kappa B p65, inhibitor of kappa B alpha (I kappa B-a), I kappa B kinase a/beta (IKK a/beta), phosphorylated IKK a/beta (p-IKK a/beta), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha, and interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta) were examined by western blotting or enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. All the protein levels of OX-42, GFAP, TNF-a, IL-1 beta, COX-2, and iNOS are increased in CCH rats. WIN and URB downregulated the levels of OX-42, GFAP, TNF-alpha, IL-1 beta, COX-2 and iNOS and inhibited CCH-induced ROS accumulation in CCH rats, indicating that WIN and URB might exert their neuroprotective effects by inhibiting the neuroinflammatory response. In addition, the NF-kappa B signaling pathway was activated by CCH in frontal cortex and hippocampus, while the aforementioned changes were reversed by WIN and URB treatment. These findings suggest that WIN and URB treatment ameliorated CCH-induced neuroinflammation through inhibition of the classical pathway of NF-kappa B activation, resulting in mitigation of chronic ischemic injury.
